Lucas Moura reckons we’ve just had a sneak peak of what his fellow Brazilian and new signing Carlos Vinicius could bring to the squad.
Snapped up from Benfica, Carlos made his debut in a 3-0 win against LASK in our Europa League Group J opener on Thursday night, and although the striker didn’t cap his display with a goal, he set up our first and third goals for Lucas and Heung-Min Son.
In-between, he would likely have tapped home Gareth Bale’s cross but Andres Andrade slid the ball into his own net as he tried to cut out the cross.
Top scorer in Portugal last season, Carlos impressed everyone with his all-round game. “I’m very happy for him, he deserves this moment,” said Lucas, who converted his third goal of the season.
He’s strong, makes good runs, good in the air and can hold the ball well... step by step he will improve, and he will help us
“Like I said before, he will help us a lot. He’s strong, makes good runs, good in the air and can hold the ball well. It’s not easy to come here from Portugal to the Premier League with a new philosophy, very, very different, and he needs to adapt quickly.
“I’m helping him, everyone is helping him, and I think he feels comfortable already. Step by step he will improve, and he will help us. He’s a very interesting player and like I said, he’s good for us, good for the squad.”
As for the victory, Lucas described it as ‘the best way to start the competition’, adding: “A 3-0 win, clean sheet, a solid performance... we need to improve in some points, but we’re happy.
“New players played for the first time, so it’s not easy, and they played very well. We have a good squad, a good mentality so, step by step, let’s do our best.”
