Heung-Min Son’s stunning solo strike against Burnley in December, 2019, has been nominated for the FIFA Puskas Award.
Coming in our 5-0 win over the Clarets in last season’s meeting at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Sonny picked up the ball on the edge of our box before darting towards goal at speed. Travelling almost 80 yards with the ball and leaving six Burnley players in his wake, our South Korean star then kept his cool to slot home past goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Our number seven’s strike was named as the Premier League’s Goal of the Season, BBC Match of the Day’s Goal of the Season and our Goal of the Season, all for the 2019/20 campaign, while it was also named as our ‘Goal of the Decade' for 2010-2019.
The FIFA Puskas Award is an annual prize given to a player from the men’s or women’s game who has been judged to have scored the best goal of the year. The winner is selected by an international judging panel of footballing legends as well as fans of the beautiful game from across the globe.
With 10 other goals shortlisted for the award, Sonny will now go up against Shirley Cruz (Costa Rica v Panama - Concacaf Women’s Olympic qualifying), Giorgian De Arrascaeta (Ceara SC v CR Flamengo – Brasileirao), Jordan Flores (Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk – League of Ireland), Andre-Pierre Gignac (UANL Tigres v Pumas UNAM – Liga MX), Sophie Ingle (Arsenal Women v Chelsea Women – FA Women’s Super League), Zlatko Junuzovic (SK Rapid Wien v Red Bull Salzburg – Bundesliga, Austria), Hlompho Kekana (Mamelodi Sundowns v Cape Town City - South African Premier Soccer League), Leonel Quinonez (Universidad Catolica v CSD Macara – Serie A, Ecuador), Luis Suarez (Barcelona v RCD Mallorca – La Liga) and Caroline Weir (Manchester City Women v Manchester United Women – FA Women’s Super League).
FIFA will announce the three finalists on 11 December, before the winner will be presented with the award at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony on 17 December.
