Jose Mourinho felt our performance against Wolves deserved more after we suffered a 3-2 home loss in the Premier League on Sunday.
We led twice in the game through Steven Bergwijn (13 minues) and Serge Aurier (45) and had chances at 2-1 in the second half, notably Dele’s header looping inches wide on 55 minutes.
Two minutes later and the game went the other way as Wolves levelled through Diogo Joto and the visitors clinched maximum points on the counter-attack, Raul Jimenez finishing clinically after 73 minutes.
The result saw Wolves climb over us into sixth but with Chelsea and Manchester United also dropping points, there is still only eight points between Chelsea in fourth and Arsenal in 10th.
“I think it was a very good game with two teams not happy with a draw, two teams trying to win, two teams with a different style,” said Jose.
Two teams not happy with a draw, two teams trying to win... I think the result is totally unfair to us, but that’s what it is
“Wolves are what we all know they are, incredibly fast and strong on the counter-attack. We are a different team and, without the strikers, we try different solutions. It worked in the sense that we managed to score goals, we managed to have some opportunities, managed to arrive in dangerous positions. I think the result is totally unfair to us, but that’s what it is.”
Dele’s chance was mentioned in Jose’s post-match press conference, underlining the narrow margins in the Premier League.
Jose said: “If you look at it with that perspective, yes, we missed a big chance to score a beautiful goal and to make it 3-1, but that’s football, no-one to blame. Ben arrives in a great position, the cross is great, Dele makes the run he has to make, he’s pretty good in the air, he was unlucky.”
Meanwhile, Hugo Lloris missed out with a groin injury, and Paulo Gazzaniga took over in goal.
Jose was asked about Hugo’s injury, and replied: “It’s hard to say when he’s going to be back. Is it a big problem? I don’t think it is, but he was not ready to play today. We’ll have to wait.”
