We take a pictorial look at the Club’s year 2020.
January
New Year’s Dismay
The worst possible start to 2020, as we go down to a 1-0 defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day, with Harry Kane limping off in the 75th minute with a hamstring injury that would keep him out of action until Project Restart in June.
Tanganga time!
Academy graduate Japhet Tanganga is thrust into the side for his Premier League debut against Liverpool and doesn’t put a foot wrong, establishing himself as a regular in our defensive line over several weeks before being sidelined by injury.
Up for the cup
Off and running in the FA Cup as Giovani Lo Celso’s early goal helped us to a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough in round three at home in N17.
February
Dream debut!
A super start to his Spurs career for Steven Bergwijn, as he scores the opening goal in our win against Manchester City just days after signing from PSV… and we saw his celebration for the first time!
Nice one, Son
Late drama at Villa Park as Heung-Min Son breaks clear to score and give us a 3-2 win against Aston Villa. It would transpire that he suffered a broken arm in the game that would require surgery.
March
Super Jan!
Jan Vertonghen celebrates after heading us in front in our FA Cup fifth round home tie with Norwich City, which ended in disappointment as we lost on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Jan would leave us following the conclusion of the season after eight years’ tremendous service, with Michel Vorm also departing.
Lockdown
Just 48 hours before we were due to play Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur, all professional football in the UK was postponed as the country went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
April
Supporting the cause
With no football taking place, we opened up our stadium to help support the NHS, with the local North Middlesex University Hospital’s women’s outpatients services operating in various areas across the venue. COVID-19 testing also took place in our underground car park.
May
Food for thought
Working with Haringey Council, we established a food distribution hub at the stadium for some of the most vulnerable people within our community with Head Coach Jose Mourinho leading the club’s initiative to help sort, pack and distribute parcels of food and essential items.
June
A new normal
After three months, football finally returned as Project Restart saw the 2019/20 Premier League season resume, with all matches taking place behind closed doors. Our first-ever such game saw us entertain Manchester United, ending in a 1-1 draw.
July
Derby delight!
Celebration time after Toby Alderweireld’s header clinches the north London derby as we came from behind to beat Arsenal 2-1 and continue our push for a European place.
Back in Europe
Harry Kane scores against Crystal Palace on the final day of the longest season ever recorded in English football, helping us to a 1-1 draw and a sixth-place finish in the Premier League, ensuring an 11th successive season of European football in 2020/21.
August
To ‘Dare’ Is To Do
Our first team squad and backroom staff were among the first to tackle our fantastic new feature at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when they put their nerves to the test on the Dare Skywalk.
September
The Son and Kane Show... Episode One
It’s been a regular feature this season as Sonny and Harry have combined for 12 goals already in the Premier League, but this was the first time in 2020/21 that we saw it in full flow – Harry setting up all four of Sonny’s goals in our 5-2 win at Southampton.
He’s Back!
Best Spurs photo of 2020? We’ll let you decide but it was certainly a moment all Spurs fans were excited about as we announced the loan signing of Gareth Bale from Real Madrid. The Welsh star was one of seven new signings – joining Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Sergio Reguilon, Matt Doherty, Carlos Vinicius and Joe Rodon in the squad.
October
Six of the best
A stunning victory as we scored six at Old Trafford for the first time in our history – including four in the first half. Son and Kane netted twice each with Tanguy Ndombele and Serge Aurier also on target.
November
American excitement
Two-time World Cup winner and USA international superstar Alex Morgan makes her debut for Spurs Women against Reading. She would go on to score twice in five games for us as she built up her fitness before making her return to the States.
Skipper and the scorer
Smiles all round for captain Hugo Lloris and goalscorer Giovani Lo Celso – netting just 35 seconds after coming off the bench – as we enjoyed another 2020 league win over Manchester City thanks to a solid defensive performance.
December
Fans back for derby day
For the first time since March, supporters were allowed back into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and 2,000 socially-distanced fans couldn’t have timed it better as they watched us record a 2-0 win over Arsenal to move back to the top of the Premier League.
Great start for Rehanne
New Spurs Women Head Coach Rehanne Skinner guides us to our first two WSL victories of the season, with back-to-back 3-1 wins over Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa earning her a place on the shortlist for Manager of the Month.
Stoked for success
Welsh internationals Gareth Bale and Ben Davies join Harry Kane on the scoresheet as we book our place in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup with victory at Stoke City in our last game before Christmas.
