Our first pre-season match and a 3-0 win against Ipswich Town at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ticked all the boxes for Jose Mourninho.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg started his first game in a Spurs shirt and played for 65 minutes. Fellow new signing Joe Hart played in the second half alongside Jack Clarke, who joined us last season and went on loan to Leeds and QPR and Academy youngsters Dennis Cirkin, Dane Scarlett and Alfie Devine all featured for the first time.
An early goal from Ryan Sessegnon on six minutes and quick follow-up double from Heung-Min Son (10, 29) secured the win.
It was good, positive... we put into practice some of the things we worked on during the week
“No injuries, very important, and we saw some good things,” said Jose. “We gave the opportunity to lots of young players to play, some really young, Alfie (Devine) was playing for Wigan Under-16s a few months ago, and (Dane) Scarlett is 16, and closer to 15 than 17. So, it was good overall.
“We managed to save the majority of the players from playing 90 minutes, which is too premature in this first week of pre-season. Ipswich play in League One, but they have trained for a few weeks, they played two teams, so they kept lots of intensity in the game. So, I think it was good.
"Gedson played right-back for the first time and he was really, really good. In the first half we had some very good combinations, Sonny, Dele, and we were quite solid in behind. It’s quite a unique situation of three goalkeepers playing in the same game, but we want to give minutes to everyone and give a positive feeling for everyone.
"So, a clean sheet, everything was good, positive and really some very good things that I don’t want to go into in detail, but we put into practice some of the things we worked on during the week.”
