Training, reading, good deeds and Star Wars... at home with Ben

Ben Davies has stepped into a whole new world as we continue to stay at home to counter the coronavirus. In fact, you could say he’s found 'a galaxy, far, far away...’

The Welsh international, 26, is using some of his spare time to tick an entertainment box and watch a legendary film franchise that started 16 years before he was born, and has continued right up until December last year.

From Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, R2D2, C3PO up to Rey, Kylo Ren, Finn, Poe and BB8, nine blockbusters over 32 years - you guessed it, Ben has started to watch the Star Wars series.

“I’ve been pretty good, I’ve read a couple of books already,” he told us on Wednesday. “I’ve read The Ride of a Lifetime by Robert Iger, the Disney CEO, I’ve read Peak by Anders Ericsson and The Power by Naomi Alderman and then I started to watch Star Wars...

“I’ve never seen Star Wars. It’s something I’ve always said I would do, and I’ve made a pact with myself that this is going to be the time to do it.”

It looks like 'Empire Strikes Back' will be my next one, so I’m looking forward to that, although I’m now getting a look from my girlfriend...

How is he going about this nine-film task? “It’s a contentious one, I’ve just gone in chronological order, as the films came out, that seems to be the general consensus,” he added.

“I watched A New Hope (1977) first, that’s number four in the whole series. That’s class. The CGI is a bit dated, but it’s also cool how they did it back then. It’s all the names you’ve heard of as well - Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, all that. I can put faces to them all now! It looks like The Empire Strikes Back will be my next one, so I’m looking forward to that, although I’m now getting a look from my girlfriend...”

A good deed...

The professional game in England has been postponed until no earlier than 30 April and as we wait for further developments, Ben and his team-mates are following Club guidelines on staying fit and government messaging on tackling COVID-19 - stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.

Ben and his girlfriend have been looking out for an elderly neighbour. “We give him a ring most days, we’ve also made him a few meals, we’ve a bit of a plan going with him,” he explained. “He’s a lovely man and it’s nice to help out. It’s something I’m sure we’re all doing during these difficult times.”
