Spurs Ladies star Ashleigh Neville has been named FA Women’s Championship Player of the Month for April.
The left-back, who memorably scored twice to cap a stunning 3-2 win at Charlton Athletic on Easter Sunday, saw off competition from the Manchester United duo of Lauren James and Charlie Devlin plus Sheffield United’s Danielle Cox to claim the prize.
She becomes the first defender to win the award and the third Spurs player to collect the monthly prize in 2018/19 after forwards Rianna Dean (October) and Sarah Wiltshire (January). Spurs Ladies have since gone on to secure a promotion spot in the division after a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.
It’s been such a special time for this amazing club and the award just tops everything off.
“I’m really honoured to receive this award, and at such an important time in the season as well,” Ashleigh said. “To be one of the first defenders to even be nominated is amazing but to actually be the first defender to win the award is such an incredible feeling. When I found out who I was up against, I thought I had no chance. With Manchester United winning the league and Sheffield in flying form, I knew it was going to be a tough one but I’m so thankful to all the supporters and everyone who voted for me. It’s been such a special time for this amazing club and the award just tops everything off.”
In further good news for Spurs Ladies, Ashleigh’s team-mate Rianna has been included in the England Under-21 squad for this month’s Open Nordic Tournament in Sweden.
