Late goal denies Legends as they warm up for MK test

Ramon Vega and Gary Doherty were among the players on duty as the Spurs Legends team returned to action in a charity match at Enfield Town FC on Sunday.

The former international duo joined Legends team regulars Mark Falco, David Howells, Stuart Nethercott and Clive Wilson as they took on Lloyd’s Vets.

The final score didn’t do the team justice, though, as their opponents snatched a 3-2 victory in the closing stages. Lloyd’s Vets had taken the lead mid-way through the first half through Danny Kelly, with Riccardo Roveta doubling their advantage five minutes after the break.

The Legends mounted a real push after the hour mark, Falco and Howells going close following right-back Brian Statham’s cross, with Falco and Nethercott closer still from the resulting corner. The breakthrough finally arrived on 67 minutes when Jeff Minton was fouled in the box and Howells converted the consequent penalty, with substitute Glen Southam rifling in the equaliser three minutes later after Doherty went up for an aerial challenge with the keeper and the ball spilled loose to the midfielder just inside the area.

Unfortunately for the Legends, a cross-field ball undid their defence, with Micky Owen peeling away from Wilson to slot in an 80th-minute winner for his side.

Spurs Legends: G Howells, Statham, Wilson, Kerslake, Nethercott, Vega, Minton, Watson, Doherty, D Howells, Falco. Substitutes: G Southam, M Southam, Jarrett, Wilkinson.

Spurs Legends return to action this Sunday (5 May) in a high-profile friendly against MK Dons Legends at Stadium MK. Kick-off is at 2pm and ticket information can be found at www.mkdons.com.
