Harry Kane: ‘City in Europe will be a great test’

Harry Kane said he didn’t expect anything but a tough tie after we were drawn against Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Friday morning’s draw pitted us against the reigning Premier League champions and current leaders in an intriguing last eight clash over two legs in April.

The first leg will be played at home on Tuesday 9 April before we go to City for the return on Wednesday 17 April – just three days before our Premier League visit to the Etihad.

It’s the first time we’ve been drawn against a fellow English club in Europe since we met Liverpool in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup in 1972/73, where we went out on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate scoreline.

Striker Harry, fresh from our training camp in Barcelona this week and now looking forward to Euro 2020 qualifiers with England against Czech Republic and Montenegro next week, is under no illusions about the challenge in front of us, but is optimistic ahead of the tie.

“They’re going to be two great games,” he said. “Manchester City are obviously one of the best teams in Europe at the moment so it will be a great test for us.

“In the quarter-finals of the Champions League you have to expect to play tough teams though, so we will be ready for it.”

Asked whether he is confident of beating City over two legs, Harry said: “Yes. We have to believe in our ability.

“It will be tough but it’s a chance to get to a Champions League semi-final so we will give it everything.”

Left-back Ben Davies has also spoken of his excitement at the draw.

“They’re big games for us,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough test playing City in the Champions League as well as in the Premier League but it’s so exciting to be playing such a big tie at this stage of the competition. We’re really looking forward to the challenge.”
