Family of Club founder visits new stadium

We were delighted to welcome family members of Bobby Buckle, one of Club's founders in 1882, to the new stadium for a tour of the facilities last week.

Bobby famously helped form the Club in a meeting held under a gaslit lamp on the High Road in 1882 and later played a key role in our move to the site of White Hart Lane, which of course is now occupied by our world-class new home. Bobby was also our first captain and scored the Club's first recorded goal. He became Honorary Secretary in the early 1890s and was on our first-ever Board of Directors in 1898.

Members of Bobby's family last visited the stadium in January, 2018, to view the progress of the construction of our new home.

Last Wednesday (17 July), they were back to experience the finished article and enjoy one of the brilliant stadium tours now available to supporters. They were joined by former pupils of Tottenham Grammar School, where Bobby and his fellow Club founders were educated.

Michael Mackman, Bobby’s grandson, said: “My grandfather would be immensely proud. He was a man with a huge vision – just 13 years old when he founded the Club and 18 years later we were FA Cup winners.

“To see this stadium rising out of what he created, he would have just loved it. It makes me so emotional to think that little old man that I knew... if he hadn’t done what he did back in the 1880s, none of this would have been here.

“To see how the baton has been taken on decade after decade and to finish up with what must surely be the best stadium in the world, it’s an incredible legacy for everyone involved right from the beginning.”
