Mauricio Pochettino explained how Harry Winks turned words into action to secure our dramatic late win at Fulham on Sunday.
The midfielder started and finished the move in the final seconds to clinch another valuable victory on our travels. Initially winning possession in our half, ‘Winksy’ sprinted to join our last attack and timed his run to perfection to meet GK Nkoudou’s cross and bury his header from close range.
Fulham barely had time to restart the game and players and fans were left to celebrate our 11th away win of the season – a Club best in the Premier League era. Earlier, Dele Alli levelled on 51 minutes after Fulham put us under pressure and led 1-0 at half-time. Dele departed injured as we chased a winner but we still managed to dig out that decisive goal.
We were talking in the last few weeks that he had to score, to have more presence in the opposition’s box because he has the quality to do it
Still only 22, Academy graduate Harry is already up to 91 appearances for us in all competitions.
He’s scored twice in that time - the first, on his full Premier League debut against West Ham back in November, 2016 - and it’s no secret that it's an area of his game the England international has been looking to improve.
“He deserves the praise because the whole action is amazing,” said Mauricio. “He recovered the ball like a full-back, we started to build from the back and then he arrived for the cross from GK, which was fantastic - we have to praise him too.
“It’s amazing, amazing, because we were talking in the last few weeks that he had to score and to have more presence in the opposition’s box because he has the quality to do it. I’m so happy.”
