Spurs 1-0 City - Mauricio's verdict

Belief was the key word for Mauricio Pochettino after another historic night at the new stadium on Tuesday.

We followed up last week’s first Premier League win against Palace by beating Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League quarter-final, first leg.

It was a performance fitting of the first European night under the lights at our new home, defined by two key moments - Hugo Lloris’ early penalty save to deny Sergio Aguero and Heung-Min Son’s winner in the 78th minute.

That means the South Korean star has two entries in the new chapter of the Club’s history book - the first Premier League goal and now first Champions League goal at the new stadium.

Chasing the ‘quadruple’, City edged possession but we edged efforts at goal 13-10 on a night to remember as we overcame the loss of Harry Kane to injury on the hour to take a narrow advantage in the overall tie.

“The performance was very good,” said Mauricio. “It’s only the first leg and for me, City are still favourites but I am happy - happy with the performance, a good approach to the game from the beginning and we were so aggressive and clever in the way we played.

“With belief and the way we played, with our quality we can beat any team.”

The second leg follows at the Etihad next Wednesday (17 April, 8pm).

“We’ve a lot of work to do, it will be tough but we believe and that’s so important,” added Mauricio. “In football, if you have belief, faith and work hard, all is possible.

“Now we need to recover the players and deliver again against Huddersfield on Saturday (Premier League at home, 12.30pm). That’s such an important game and three points. It will be tough and we need the same motivation and to play the same way. We are confident we can deliver the job again.”
