Kane’s case for defence

Harry Kane may have just fired us to victory at Huddersfield – and taken fifth place on his own in our all-time top goalscoring list – but he was happy to switch the focus onto our defensive display at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The striker matched last season’s performance against the Terriers with goals after 26 and 33 minutes to see us home. One day less than a year ago, he scored twice as we went 3-0 up inside half-an-hour and won 4-0.

Harry’s double took him to 145 goals for the Club in all competitions and lifted him above Jermain Defoe (143) into fifth place on our all-time goalscoring list – that’s 145 goals in 221 appearances.

Despite all that, the skipper was well aware of the defensive job required as the Terriers looked at a longer game and bombarded our box with long throws, crosses and set-pieces – all dealt with.

“It was a good battle out there,” said Harry, who now has five goals this term.

“It was important we scored the first goal and calmed the nerves a bit, but it was tough, windy, the pitch was dry, they obviously went longer with throw-ins and set plays so we had to fight.

“They are fighting for points as well. The defence had to head a lot of balls out of the box, we had to hold it up and be strong.

"It was a grind out there. It was one of those games and it always feels a bit sweeter when you’ve fought like that to get the win.

“Clean sheets win you matches so the defence will be happy with that...we’re all happy with that because we all work hard for it, so it’s a big win for us and on to the next one.”
