All you need to know ahead of Sunday afternoon’s game.

Sat 01 September 2018, 16:12|Tottenham Hotspur

We take the short trip to Watford on Sunday afternoon, with both teams looking to maintain their 100 per cent records in the Premier League this season.

Heung-Min Son cancelled out an early Christian Kabasele header while Davinson Sanchez saw red in our last trip to Vicarage Road, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Here’s everything you need to know about our opponents...

Team news

Gerard Deulofeu could be in the squad for the hosts following his return from injury, but Tom Cleverley remains out. Nathaniel Chalobah limped out of the midweek Carabao Cup win at Reading with cramp but has trained since.

One to watch

Roberto Pereyra has been in sensational form so far this season, scoring three goals in his side’s first three games.

The midfielder began his career at River Plate, but was soon spotted by scouts at Udinese. After a successful spell with the Zebrette, he moved to Juventus – initially on loan – before joining on a permanent basis. He arrived at Watford in 2016.

His exceptional positioning, off-the-ball awareness and keen eye for goal makes him a dangerous player in Javi Gracia’s side.

Previous clash

In a key game during last season’s run-in, we triumphed 2-0 against the Hornets at Wembley as we edged closer to securing a Champions League berth for a third successive campaign.

Dele capitalised on a mistake from Watford goalkeeper Orestis Karnezis to open the scoring after 16 minutes, with Harry Kane tucking in a Kieran Tripper cross soon after the second half kicked-off to seal the win.

It put us five points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea with three games remaining and we went on to secure a top four finish at home to Newcastle in our penultimate game of the season.

Watford’s form

It’s been a dream start to the Premier League season for Watford as they sit on nine points after three wins from three games.

They began the season with a 2-0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion thanks to a Roberto Pereyra brace.

With 3-1 and 2-1 victories against Burnley and Crystal Palace respectively also under their belts, they won 2-0 at Reading in the second round of the Carabao Cup in midweek and go into Sunday’s game full of confidence.

Magic moment

We headed to Vicarage Road on 28 December, 2015, looking to maintain our top four position in the league and close down Leicester City.

Erik Lamela opened the scoring after latching onto a heavy touch from Craig Cathcart and slotting past former Spur Heurelho Gomes. However, Odion Ighalo levelled things up after Eric Dier struggled to deal with a bouncing ball and Ighalo poked under Hugo Lloris.

But it was Heung-Min Son to the rescue as the South Korean’s cute flick in front of the travelling fans claimed all three points in the final minutes of the game.

Played for both

Defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue spent two seasons with us following his transfer from Toulouse in August, 2013, making his debut for the club in a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace later that month.

Having scored once in 24 appearances in our colours, he moved to Watford in the summer of 2015. Capoue, who has been capped seven times for France, equalled his highest goalscoring campaign in 2016/17 in his second season at Vicarage Road, finishing with seven strikes, including four goals in the first six games of that campaign.

Now in his fourth year with the Hornets, he operates as one of their defensive midfielders alongside Abdoulaye Doucoure and is one of three ex-Spurs players on the books at Vicarage Road, alongside goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and defender Younes Kaboul.

What they’re saying

Watford manager Javi Gracia insists his players will apply themselves with the same levels of spirit and determination that they’ve shown since the start of the campaign: “We have played against very good teams,” he said. “Crystal Palace and Brighton and Burnley were difficult games. I know Tottenham play in the Champions League, they have very good players and a very good coach, but it's no different to us. It's our mentality. We know they have very good players, but we are only focused on looking for a way to win.

“They played really well (in the 3-0 win at Manchester United), but United in the beginning had chances to score. After that, Tottenham played well and scored goals. They have very good players with a lot of mobility, high quality and you have to pay attention and defend well because they create many chances.”
