Mauricio Pochettino said the team 'gave everything' without reward as City won Monday evening’s Premier League clash at Wembley.

Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal of the game after six minutes.

That was the manager’s only frustration as he described the winner as a ‘cheap’ goal that came out of nothing.

We fought our way back into the game and got into some good areas going forward without creating clear-cut chances. Harry Kane fired just over from 25 yards and was then sent clear only to overrun the ball and allow Ederson to rush out and block.

We gave everything to try to win - you can say nothing but to be proud of the effort of the team

City missed chances as well as we continued to chip away and we finally created the best opportunity of the game on 79 minutes. Dele Alli won possession from Mahrez, Kane took defenders away, Dele rolled in to Erik Lamela who fired over from 12 yards.

“It was a very good performance,” said Mauricio. “I’m disappointed with the result but I think the performance was good.

“It was an even game, we were very competitive in a good game in difficult circumstances for both teams. I’m happy in the way we played and competed.

“We gave everything to try to win. You can say nothing but to be proud of the effort of the team.”

As for City’s goal, he added: “Yes, disappointed, but what can we do now? We can only work hard, try to give the team trust and confidence and look forward to the next game.”

The next game arrives quickly - our Carabao Cup fourth round tie against West Ham at the London Stadium on Wednesday night (7.45pm).
