Everything on... Cardiff City

We have played Cardiff City five times this century and will be looking to maintain a proud record of not conceding against them in that period when we meet at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

The only two league meetings in that spell came in the 2013/14 season when we eked out 1-0 victories in both games and the Welsh side will be eager to avoid a repeat of that campaign, which saw them relegated to the Championship.

Team news

Junior Hoilett is back in contention after missing Cardiff’s last league game against Burnley through illness. Fellow midfielder Aron Gunnarsson remains sidelined with a knee problem while Lee Peltier (dislocated shoulder) and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing (cruciate knee ligament) have both been ruled out for several months.

One to watch

Víctor Camarasa had the honour of scoring Cardiff’s first goal of the season on their return to the top flight and the midfielder has been impressive during the Bluebirds’ difficult start to the campaign following his loan move from Real Betis.

Camarasa spent 10 years in the youth system at Valencia before making his breakthrough into first-team action at Levante. He was a regular in their La Liga side for two seasons before their relegation but his quality ensured he stayed in the top tier for the following campaign with a loan move to promoted Alavés.

His form there earned him a permanent switch to Real Betis, who he helped finish sixth in the top flight and secure Europa League football last season.

Previous clash

We continued our push for European football with a narrow victory against Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side in March, 2014.

The key moment came in the 28th minute when Andros Townsend and Emmanuel Adebayor led a counter-attack that culminated in a composed finish from Roberto Soldado – his first goal in nine games.

Former Spur Steven Caulker immediately headed against the bar in response as Cardiff sought an equaliser but we comfortably saw out the game after the interval to record our third win in four league games.

Cardiff’s form

Neil Warnock’s 19th-placed side head to Wembley Stadium still seeking their first league win after a trying start to the campaign.

Goals were hard to come by at first as they failed to score in a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth, then in goalless draws against Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town.

They have been better in front of goal since but a run of four extremely tough fixtures has seen them fail to pick up further points. They ran Arsenal close at home, eventually succumbing 3-2, but heavy defeats followed at Chelsea (1-4) and against Manchester City (0-5) before Burnley sneaked a 2-1 victory in Wales last time out.

Magic moment

We dominated from start to finish when we travelled to Cardiff in September, 2013, but it looked as though the breakthrough would elude us until a moment of magic from Paulinho deep into stoppage time.

The Brazilian summer signing audaciously back-heeled substitute Erik Lamela’s 92nd-minute cross past the desperate lunge of Kevin Theophile-Catherine and goalkeeper David Marshall, who had almost single-handedly denied us to that point, to the delight of the Spurs fans behind the goal.

Played for both

Full-back Chris Gunter arrived at Spurs from Cardiff City in January, 2008, having come up through the ranks and played 32 senior games for the Bluebirds. He went on to make 16 appearances for us before joining Nottingham Forest, initially on loan, in 2009.

Now at Reading, he is the most-capped outfield player of all time for Wales, having made his debut in May, 2007, and racked up 89 appearances to date.

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock expects a big challenge for his players as their tough run of fixtures continues this weekend, but believes the chance to play at Wembley can give his troops an extra lift.

“Barcelona were there on Wednesday night and next up, Cardiff City. It’s fantastic that we’ve got to this stage, but I don’t want us to go there for a day out,” he said.

“I want us to give them a game if we can. It is a fabulous stadium though, and a great treat for the fans.

“We’re all in it together and I know it sounds silly, but it’s almost like a family. It’s great for the players, because the fans know they’re giving everything.”
