Spurs quartet help Three Lions to famous win

Mon 15 October 2018, 22:28|Tottenham Hotspur

Harry Kane led England to a famous win against Spain in Seville on Monday night.

The skipper was joined by Spurs team-mates Eric Dier, Kieran Trippier and Harry Winks in the starting line-up as the Three Lions won 3-2 in the UEFA Nations League at the Estadio Benito Villamarin, home of Real Betis.

Kane was involved in all three goals as England raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time.

Dier was a tower of strength in midfield where he was joined in a 4-3-3 system by Winks, who was everywhere in what was only his second cap. Trippier was typically tireless up and down the right flank. Dier played the full game, Trippier was substituted on 85 minutes and Winks departed in the 90th.

England opened the scoring on 16 minutes when Kane found space centrally to take a pass from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford before picking out Marcus Rashford on the left touchline. Rashford played in Raheem Sterling who fired past David de Gea.

Kane made the second goal out of nothing with classic hold-up play from Pickford's long clearance on 29 minutes. He held off three defenders and then threaded a pass through to Rashford who controlled and finished one-on-one.

It was 3-0 on 38 minutes when Ross Barkley picked out Kane's run in behind Spain's defensive line and this time, he volleyed back into the path of Sterling who converted from close range.

As expected, Spain responded in the second half and replied through Paco Alcacer (59) and Sergio Ramos in the 98th minute but they could not prevent their first defeat in a competitive home fixture since 2003.

It's amazing. Spain are one of the in-form teams in the world right now. We're going to enjoy this. It was a great performance

Harry Kane speaking to Sky Sports post-match

Speaking afterwards on Sky Sports, Harry said: "It's amazing. Spain are one of the in-form teams in the world right now. We came out of the blocks firing, great pressing, great goals. In the second half we knew it was going to be tough but we defended well and soaked up the pressure.

"We're going to enjoy this. It was a great performance. Everyone dug deep, we played well and deserved the three points."

Over the weekend, Kenya skipper Victor Wanyama scored from the penalty spot as his nation won 3-0 at home to Ethiopia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. That was on Sunday – the same day that saw youngster Dennis Cirkin play an hour for England Under-17s in their 3-0 win over Russia in Shrewsbury.

On Saturday, striker Troy Parrott scored a second-half hat-trick, including two penalties, as Republic of Ireland Under-19s won 3-0 at home to Faroe Islands in a European Under-19 Championship qualifier, while his Spurs youth team colleague Maxi Tainio was on the bench for Finland Under-19s in a 3-0 loss to Italy in the same competition.
