Wolves v Spurs - Preview from the Press Box

Fri 02 November 2018, 15:11|Tottenham Hotspur

Freelance journalist Tim Nash, former Wolves correspondent for the Express & Star in Wolverhampton and co-author of Wolves' legend Kenny Hibbitt's 'Seasons Of My Life' gives us his insight into Nuno Espirito Santo's squad ahead of Saturday evening's Premier League clash at Molineux in our latest 'Preview from the Press Box'.

Form

Tim: "I think many people observing from the outside have been surprised at how well Wolves have adapted to the Premier League. But to those who saw them last season, there were no hidden secrets. Perhaps the only surprise has been the two defeats which they go into this game with - the first time that has happened under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Wolves produced their worst performance of the season in their 2-0 defeat against Watford in their last home game. They were much improved at Brighton last week and arguably should have won after dominating possession for much of the game and creating plenty of chances, so much so that home fans were remarking afterwards at how they won 1-0."

This game

Tim: "This is one talking point where there is no doubt. Nuno has a plan and never deviates from it. Yes, they will prepare to deal with certain individuals, but as far as their own preparations go, it will be about practising more of the same. They always play 3-4-3 and Nuno only made his first change to his line-up at Brighton after setting a Premier League record with nine unchanged XIs from the start of the season. Despite the loftier position in the table of Tottenham, they will look to press high, while staying in their shape, and attack whenever they can. They certainly won't be intimidated by Spurs; they did just the same against both Manchester clubs and surprised them with their positive approach and were rewarded with a point in both games."

Key player

Tim: "Adama Traore. The club's £18m record signing has had to wait patiently for his starting chance in the Premier League, after having to be content with action from the bench until his full debut at Brighton last week. For me, he has only shown flashes of what he is capable of so far. But after being touted as the quickest player in the top flight, he has the potential to cause any defence problems and Wolves fans will be hoping he can find his best form against Spurs."

Key area

Tim: "With an abundance of chances created this season but only nine goals scored in the Premier League, it's clear where Wolves need to improve. Raul Jimenez, the striker, is a willing worker but needs to be more clinical in the box, but he is not alone in that aspect. Wolves have been at their best this season when they have got a grip of the midfield and they will again see this area as a priority. In Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho they have two players of excellent vision who are generally excellent in possession. But they were unusually subdued against Watford and will be looking to impose themselves far better this time. If that midfield area is functioning well, they will help to create the chances they need to score."

Prediction

Tim: "I think I'm going to plump for a score draw - 1-1. Wolves have shown they can be a match for the top teams this season and with an intimidating, packed Molineux in full voice, will do so again."
