Dele Alli revealed that Heung-Min Son was a bit down at half-time after seeing chances come and go to add to our 2-0 scoreline in a dominant first half against Chelsea.
Indeed, Sonny went close four times in that opening salvo, denied twice by Kepa Arrizabalaga and narrowly off target on another two occasions. Dele and Harry Kane had hit the target and we could have been out of sight.
Of course, Sonny responded in style with a wonderful third goal from Dele’s assist as we ran out deserved 3-1 winners at Wembley, ending Chelsea’s unbeaten run and moving above them into third in the Premier League with our 10th win in 13 matches.
I could see on his face at half-time that he was disappointed but he was a real threat and to keep going and score a goal like that shows what an amazing player he is
It was Sonny’s 50th goal for us in 154 appearances in all competitions and his first goal in the Premier League this term - his relief was palpable as he spoke to Spurs TV after a memorable victory.
“It’s right, Dele said the right things, I was sad because the players did very well and if I get those chances I have to be clinical against big teams,” said Sonny.
“I had a lot of chances to score but I missed. I was sad for my team-mates. I never gave up, kept going and scored a great goal. I was very happy.
“Dele’s pass was unbelievable. It’s amazing to score a goal like this and I feel very proud. I was very sorry because I went away for a long time, didn’t play well in my opinion, but the fans support me until I play well again, and I’m grateful for that.”
Had it been tough for him so far this season? “No, not ‘tough’…the players work so hard and I want to help the team and show performances for the fans as well, that’s very important,” he added. “It was me thinking...not tough...just thinking that the fans make me play well and I thank them for that.”
Meanwhile, Sonny described the performance as ‘the best of the season’.
“We showed very good character, pressed, created a lot of chances,” he beamed. “I think everyone enjoyed it and we deserved to win.
“It was unbelievable from everyone, every single player. I’m so happy for that and to get three points against a big team like Chelsea who are one of the best teams in the Premier League, but we dominated against them. I’m very happy.”
