We were saddened to hear the news that our former half-back Jim Iley passed away on Saturday. He was 82.

Born at Kirkby, Yorkshire, Jim worked at a local colliery while playing part-time for Sheffield United. He became a professional at Bramall Lane in June, 1953, and soon gained a regular first team place with his excellent skills and precision passing.

Jim joined Spurs in August, 1957, although initially he continued to live in Sheffield and train with the Blades. Once in our side, he soon became first choice and won representative honours with England at Under-23 level and the Football League.

After 57 senior games for Tottenham he left for Nottingham Forest in July, 1959, but it was with Newcastle United that he enjoyed his best years, helping the Magpies to promotion to the top flight in 1965.

Jim took on the role of player-manager at Peterborough United in January, 1969, and subsequently managed Barnsley, Blackburn Rovers, Bury and Exeter City.

We extend our sincere condolences to Jim’s family and friends at this sad time.
