Youngsters shine as GK's goal sinks AC Milan

ICC: AC Milan 0-1 Spurs

Wed 01 August 2018, 04:12|Tottenham Hotspur

Six Academy players started as GK Nkoudou's goal secured victory in our final International Champions Cup (ICC) match against AC Milan at the US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis on Tuesday night, local time.

Luke Amos, Anthony Georgiou and Kyle Walker-Peters were joined in the starting 11 by TJ Eyoma, George Marsh and Oliver Skipp, their first 'public' starts at this level. A proud night for the Club.

Nkoudou's strike was worthy of winning any game. Just over a minute into the second half, a loose ball came to him from the right and GK, 30 yards out, sped away from Mateo Musacchio before lashing into the roof of the net.

It's testament to the youngsters' footballing upbringing that we enjoyed long spells of possession against the Serie A side, particularly in the first half.

However, chances were at a premium. Luke Amos came closest for us when he closed down Musacchio's clearance and the ball zipped just wide of the open goal.

At the other end, Michel Vorm had to be at his best to palm away Patrick Cutrone's point-blank header. Suso delivered that cross and a couple more fizzed dangerously across goal, coming to nothing.

The youngsters not only show a great performance on the pitch, we feel very proud of how they behave outside the pitch.

Paulo Gazzaniga replaced skipper Vorm for the second half and produced a reaction block to keep out Hakan Calhanoglu's blaster from 22 yards. At the other end, Gianluigi Donnarumma made two key blocks to deny Nkoudou, both chances from Milan mistakes.

Christian Eriksen and Heung-Min Son came off the bench just after the hour and with Davinson Sanchez in imperious form on his first start in pre-season, we kept the Italians at bay, Jose Mauri slicing the best chance wide in added time.

The win means we've come through our three ICC matches against AS Roma (4-1), Barcelona (2-2) and AC Milan (1-0) unbeaten - albeit losing on penalties to Barca.
