‘I felt good walking up to take my kick'

Kieran Trippier has described his emotions after converting his penalty in a dramatic shoot-out against Colombia to take England into the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

‘Trips’ capped another fine display with the perfect spot-kick into the top corner under huge pressure in Moscow.

That was England’s fourth penalty in the shoot-out. Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford converted, Jordan Henderson and then Mateus Uribe missed, Trips converted, Jordan Pickford then saved brilliantly from Carlos Bacca and it was left to Eric Dier to win it – he slotted home and the nation erupted!

Obviously there were a few nerves there but I've worked hard on penalties in training.

It meant all three of our players scored to secure England’s first penalty shoot-out win in World Cup history. Harry also buried a penalty in normal time to take his tally to six for the tournament, two clear in the race for the Golden Boot.

How did it feel in that cauldron?

Trips spoke to us after a glory, glory night for England.

“I felt good walking up to take my penalty,” he said. “Obviously there were a few nerves there but I've worked hard on penalties in training and I put my hand up to take a penalty if it ever came to it. I was so happy to score!

“Eric then showed amazing character to step up and slot home the winner.

“For my team-mate for Club and country to step up and score the winning penalty, I couldn't be happier for him. The most important thing is that we all trust in each other.”

The win has set up a quarter-final against Sweden in Samara on Saturday (3pm UK).

“Sweden will be a tough game,” added Trips. “They've done really well to get to the quarter-finals. As I said, it's another tough one but make no mistake we will be ready for it.”
