Locals engage with stadium job opportunities

This weekend, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and Levy UK, the Club’s Official Catering Partner, hosted a food and drink jobs fair for local people at Tottenham Town Hall.

Over 100 people attended to find out about the roles available within the catering team at the new stadium.

There are 1,600 matchday jobs available within the catering team including waiting staff chefs, kitchen porters and bar tenders. Jobs are being made available to local people to apply for as part of the Club’s continued drive to generate employment opportunities within the Tottenham area through the stadium scheme.

The event was attended by Michelin-starred chef Chris Galvin and Club Ambassador Ledley King, who entertained crowds by making a specially designed dessert – ‘The Tottenham Mess’.

Galvin, a lifelong Spurs fan, is bringing his world-renowned fine dining cuisine to the Premium areas of the new stadium. Not only is he one of a host of celebrated chefs helping to design the menus and prepare the food within the flagship On Four experience, the ‘Galvin at Tottenham’ restaurants will echo his well-known London venues La Chapelle and Windows.

There will be a wide range of delicious food and drink outlets available to all fans visiting the new stadium. The Club has designed the stadium’s food and drink experience around feedback from fans and has looked to embrace the local vibe and culture. From signature pies, street food style dishes to Europe’s longest bar, there will be something for everyone.

Applicants for the job roles will be given the opportunity to complete their Level 2 certificate in Customer Service which will be funded and facilitated by the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. This will consist of learning how to deal with customers face-to-face and how to maintain a positive and customer-friendly attitude. All candidates who pass this course will then be guaranteed an interview for one of the food and drink roles in the new stadium. To date, over 90 people have successfully completed the course.

As well as providing job opportunities, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and Levy UK are partnering with Haringey 6th Form College to run a ‘Chefs Academy’. This is a Level 2 Professional Cookery Course for 16- to 18-year-olds that starts in September, 2018, and is designed to develop future culinary talent in Haringey.

To date, Tottenham Hotspur has created 1,458 new jobs for local people as a direct result of its ongoing new stadium development scheme and sport-led regeneration of the area. Jobs have been already delivered across a range of industries, including retail, education, construction, hospitality, IT and security, with all going to local people.

Sapphire, aged 34, who is due to start working in the stadium as a bar supervisor, said: “I have been excited about applying for a job in the new stadium for a long time. Having been born and bred in Tottenham it’s a great opportunity to work in a world-class stadium so close to home. In addition to the job, I am looking forward to developing my skills and experience through the training the Club and Levy UK provide. I can’t wait to start!”

Ledley King, Club Ambassador, said: “I am proud to be part of a Club that supports its local people and provides employment opportunities within the new stadium. This is a fantastic opportunity for local people to be part of something really special right on their doorstep.”

Chris Galvin said: “The catering industry has been part of my life for so many years and has given me so many opportunities. I’ve also been a Spurs fan all my life, with family from the local area. I am delighted to be supporting this project which will not only bring new talent into the catering industry, but will also help transform the lives of people in an area that means a lot to me.”

Levy UK was appointed Tottenham Hotspur’s Official Catering Partner in February, 2017, and will be delivering world-class and innovative catering all year round for matchday and non-matchday events.

In total, the completed stadium development will support around 3,500 jobs, with £293 million pumped into the local economy each year. This represents an increase of 1,700 new jobs and £166 million local spending a year – an enormous impact for an area in real need of new jobs and more economic activity.
