Spurs 1-0 Arsenal - Mauricio's reaction

Manager salutes 'magnificent' display in derby victory

It was a derby that ticked all the boxes for Mauricio Pochettino – a deserved victory, fantastic team performance, clean sheet, huge three points in the Premier League and the win every Spurs fan wants.

Harry Kane’s towering header four minutes into the second half ultimately proved decisive but it’s not unrealistic to suggest we could have been three, four or five goals up by the time Arsenal missed their best chances in the final five minutes.

We’d dominated but the goal sparked our best spell of chances as Harry glanced just wide and Petr Cech denied Harry, Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli and Erik Lamela.

However, it was still 1-0 when Alexandre Lacazette escaped our defensive line for a clear sight of goal, sliding wide of Hugo Lloris and just wide.

Anything less than a Spurs win would have been an absolute travesty.

“The performance was magnificent, amazing,” said Mauricio. “I congratulate the players because they played so well and to win the derby, three points that put us in a very good position in the battle for the top four, is something to be really happy about.

“After 20, 25 minutes of the second half the score should have been three or four-nil but sometimes that happens when you create a lot of chances. Cech was very good, we didn’t score and we suffered a little at the end.

It was a fantastic goal, an amazing finish. He’s one of the best.

Mauricio Pochettino on Harry Kane's winner

“Team was fantastic – that’s a clean sheet against Arsenal and Manchester United and we’re very pleased with the performances against United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

“The three points are most important and now we have to keep going with Juventus in the Champions League on Tuesday.”

Mauricio's praise for fans

The noise was incredible from the 83,222 crowd at Wembley Stadium, connected by EE.

It was another record mark in the Premier League and now our record home league attendance.

It was also a new record mark for the north London derby.

“Our fans were amazing and we’re so pleased for them," said Mauricio. "We know what it means to win the derby."
