A special night for double-winner Cliff Jones

Legendary winger Cliff honoured at Wembley

Thu 08 February 2018, 08:04|Tottenham Hotspur

Cliff Jones turned 83 on Wednesday night - and we continued the celebrations at Wembley, with a little help from one of his friends, former team-mates and fellow Spurs legend Pat Jennings.

How apt that the Welsh wizard's birthday fell on the same day that we played Newport County in an FA Cup fourth round replay at the scene of the Club's greatest achievement, when Cliff helped us clinch the league and FA Cup double by winning the FA Cup against Leicester City in May, 1961.

It's also over 50 years since Cliff faced his brother Bryn as we took on Newport in the FA Cup in successive years, 1959 and 1960.

Even more poignantly, it's approaching 60 years since Cliff first signed for the Club - 15 February, 1958. He went on to make 378 appearances, winning the league, three FA Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup before departing for Fulham in 1968.

Cliff remains fourth in our all-time top goalscorers' list on 159 - behind only Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Smith and Martin Chivers.

Another all-time great Pat presented Cliff with a special framed programme cover of his home debut against Sunderland on 15 March, 1958 and a huge cake to mark his 83rd birthday.

Cliff said: "It feels like I've been at Tottenham all my life and it's great to be here now, still working for the Club and with this young team, I tell you, we are going places. The world is our oyster."
