Heung-Min Son received the ultimate accolade as he was applauded by Everton fans after his Man of the Match display in our 6-2 win at Goodison on Sunday.

The South Korean star shone again in a remarkable victory – scoring two, assisting two – as we remained third in the table at Christmas, just two points behind City.

After we trailed against the run of play, Sonny equalised with a clinical finish from a tight angle. His shot was then parried out by Jordan Pickford for Dele to slot home for 2-1 before Harry Kane made it 3-1 at the break. Christian Eriksen rifled in for 4-1, Sonny added his second for 5-2 and then crossed for Harry to complete the scoring.

Substituted late, Everton supporters in the main Goodison Road stand showed their appreciation by clapping him off.

It was only the fourth time we’ve scored six goals or more on our travels in the Premier League era.

As always, Sonny turned to his team-mates when it was explained to him that it was a rarity for opposing players to be applauded off.

“I’m just grateful to my team-mates,” he said. “We played well. We deserved it. For me, everyone deserved to get Man of the Match. The fans were brilliant again and it was a great afternoon. We will have a merry Christmas!”

No-one is selfish, we all help each other and that’s why we score a lot of goals - I’m lucky to play with these guys, I enjoy every moment

It was left to Harry Kane to explain the significance. “It’s unbelievable,” he said. “That doesn’t happen a lot, especially in England. We all know how good Sonny is, he scored another two goals today and assisted me as well, which was nice!

“He was brilliant and a nuisance for them the whole game. Hopefully we’ll continue, Sonny keeps doing what he’s doing and we’ll be in good shape.”

Sonny also told us what a pleasure it was to be part of the front four at the moment – any combination of Harry, Dele, Christian, Erik Lamela, Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente in those attacking areas.

He added: “Everyone enjoys it at the moment because we understand (each other) very well, like when I play with Harry or Lucas, I understand them, no-one is selfish, we all try to help each other and that’s why we score a lot of goals. I think we’re a good partnership and friendship – I’m lucky to play with these guys and I enjoy every moment.”
