It was deja-vu at the King Power Stadium as Dele headed home his 50th goal for the Club to wrap up a 2-0 win against Leicester City on Saturday night.
Dele’s diving header immediately sparked memories of his first goal for us – a diving header at the same end of the stadium, into the same goal, from just about the same spot past the same goalkeeper in Kasper Schmeichel in August, 2015. It really was uncanny...
Heung-Min Son had earlier curled home a beauty to break the deadlock in a game of few chances with Dele’s header seeing us home and back up to third in the Premier League.
There was plenty to talk about afterwards...
Dele on Sonny
“We knew it wasn’t going to be easy and it’s at times like that you need someone to produce a little magic and Sonny certainly did that. It’s something he works on every day after training, that exact finish, coming in off the right and whipping it in. No-one was surprised when it went in.”
Dele on Sonny’s ability off both feet
“It’s a special talent. A lot of players don’t have that. A lot of players are very one-footed but Sonny is someone who can do it. It’s difficult for defenders because you don’t know which way to send him because as he showed tonight, if you put him on his left foot he can hit it sometimes better than his right, so it’s difficult.”
Dele on the win
“I felt like we dominated the game. They are a very good side and showed it again tonight. You have to move the ball quickly through the final third because they are solid at the back and sometimes it was just that final touch or final pass.
“It’s tough to win here. They have quality players and manager and they know what they are doing. You have to come here and stick to the game plan. It’s very easy to get frustrated and they can punish you as well, so you have to stay switched on throughout the 90 minutes and we did that. They had a couple of chances but apart from that, we defended very well, stayed patient and got the two goals. In the end it was a good three points and a win we deserved.”
Dele on 50 up
“I thought straight away it was very similar to the first goal I scored here. It’s a position I like to get myself into, you make the runs and sometimes the ball doesn’t come, sometimes it does. I might have been half a step offside and sometimes they go for you or against you but as I said, it’s a position I like to get myself into and thankfully I put it in.”
Dele on - goals aren’t everything...
“Every player loves to score goals, every player loves to get assists and as an attack-minded player I want to be a part of creating goals and scoring them but that’s not what I feel my game is all about. Obviously it’s nice to help every now and then but I want to help the team in other ways as well because we’ve got a lot of players who are capable of getting goals so sometimes it’s nice to do the other work as well.”
