Luke Amos: “It sounds a cliché, but it’s a dream come true”

Mon 13 August 2018, 15:46|Tottenham Hotspur

Luke Amos became the latest Academy graduate to appear in the Premier League with his debut at Newcastle United on Saturday. Like his predecessors, his feet are firmly on the ground.

The midfielder, 21, impressed in pre-season performances against AS Roma, Barcelona, AC Milan and Girona and was rewarded with a place in the first team squad for the season opener at St James’ Park.

True to form, when it came to the crunch, Mauricio Pochettino didn’t hesitate to throw Luke into the action, this time as a late substitute with us leading 2-1 and looking to close out the match as the home team pushed on for an equaliser.

It was job done. Luke buzzed around for the final six minutes, there were no major alarms and we pocketed three valuable points.

I’ll keep working hard every day, try to impress in training and hopefully I’ll get more opportunities

Luke experienced Football League action with loans at Southend United (2016-17) and earned rave reviews at Stevenage in League Two in the second half of last season.

As he pointed out at St James’ Park, this was another step on the path...

“It feels good, as a kid, that’s what you visualise, that’s what you work towards every day in training so to finally get out there…it sounds a cliché to say it’s a dream come true, but it really is,” said Luke.

“It was an important few minutes as well. At 2-1 up, we’re trying to win the game, a big game away from home. It was great to get on at that stage.

“The key thing for me is that it’s just the start. I’ll keep working hard every day, try to impress in training and hopefully I’ll get more opportunities.

“Some people say it’s the easy part getting in, but that’s not necessarily true.

“It’s the hard part getting in and the even harder part staying in!

“That’s all you want, to put yourself in a position to be in and around the squad. For me, yes, it’s another box ticked on the path but I’ve plenty of miles to go, so I’ll keep working hard.”
