World Cup 2014 - Spurs fans in Brazil

A number of Spurs fans have travelled to the World Cup and will give us an insight into life in Brazil during the tournament.

Destin Makumbu, a former Academy trainee here at Spurs now plying his trade in Norway, has already landed in Rio and reports on his first couple of days - including last night's win against Croatia.

Here's his latest update...

Brazil flags are flying everywhere - on car windows, in the markets and the stores, at the parks. I can see Sugar Loaf Mountain and, of course, the statue of Christ overlooks the city, it is spectacular. FIFA could not have picked a better host nation.

My journey began on Monday from Mo i Rana, just south of the Arctic Circle in Norway. I took the train down to Oslo Gardermoen airport, then caught a flight from Heathrow to Rio de Janeiro, via JFK Airport in New York.

As soon as I arrived, I met so many people from different nationalities and backgrounds. We are all here for the same cause, to experience World Cup football and enjoy the beautiful game we all love so much. I also met former West Ham United, Birmingham City and Australian international winger, Stan Laziridis!

On Thursday, we took the subway from where we are staying down to Ipanema, enjoying the sights and taking in the fantastic beaches. We saw the Caesar Park Hotel where the Dutch are staying, overlooking the beach.

We met three English lads and one from Wales who are staying here for two weeks and are heading to Manaus to watch England take on Italy - one of them was a Spurs fan!

Obviously it was Brazil’s first game and there were so many gold and green jerseys everywhere you looked. We took a stroll down to Copacabana beach to check out the FIFA Fan Fest area where thousands of fans packed in to watch the opening game on the gigantic screen.

The atmosphere was good but there were a lot of police cars and vans lined up along the side of the road, they certainly weren’t taking any chances. It was impossible to get in to the Fan Fest so we watched the match at a great sports bar just a few minutes walk from Copacabana.

All the overseas visitors were cheering on Brazil – apart from the Croatians of course – and there were a few tense moments, especially when Croatia took the lead through Marcelo’s own goal. But we all felt Brazil would score at some point, Croatia defended for their lives but it wasn’t enough in the end.

The place erupted when Neymar equalised, everyone was hugging each other! Despite the dubious penalty it was probably a fair result and the whole country seemed to be celebrating until the early hours – so we joined in of course!
