Where are they now? Pat Jennings

Mon 14 May 2001, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Pat Jennings breezes into The Hertfordshire Golf Club in Broxbourne.

He has a face recognised by millions and, no surprises, everyone knows him here. “Hello Pat,” says the lady on reception. “How are you Pat? Played lately?” asks a passing golfer.

Dressed resplendently in golfing gear from an early morning round, Pat takes us around to the main restaurant, with a delightful view of the course. “Nice view from here,” he says. No-one would argue.

Few would argue either that the man sitting in front of the camera is the best goalkeeper in the club’s history and, at his peak, the best in the world.

Can I take you back to when you joined the club? I asked. “Not many people would remember that,” he joked. But Big Pat will never be forgotten.

Just in case you need reminding, here’s a brief rundown of Pat’s career.

He joined the club after one season at Watford in 1964 and went on to play almost 600 competitive games for us between 1964-1977.

In that time he won the FA Cup, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup before his move to Arsenal in 1977. He actually returned to the club in 1985-86, where he played mostly reserve games, before turning out for Northern Ireland in the 1986 World Cup — the last of his 119 caps.

He has been coaching at the club on a part-time basis since 1993 and now, approaching his 56th birthday, can still be found at Spurs Lodge putting Neil Sullivan and Ian Walker through their paces.

Of course, such specialised coaching wasn’t around when he was number one.

Pat revealed: “In those days we were just sent to the corner of the field unless coaches wanted us for shooting practice.

“All the boys would just think ‘there they are, skiving again’. It is better now though. The more you practice the better you get. What took me 10, 20 years to learn they can now learn from our experiences.

“I could have been a much better goalkeeper if I had that sort of upbringing.”

Now that is saying something.
