History of PSV Eindhoven: Early years-European Cup triumph

The Eindhoven Football Club PSV was founded on August 31, 1913, at the end of a large Philips sports festival marking the 100th anniversary of Dutch independence.

Originally PSV Football was one of 19 members of the Philips Sports Club (in Dutch abbreviated to PSV). The present Philips Stadium is still on the same location as when it was first built.

From 1914 onwards PSV took part in league football and a few years later, after a string of promotions, the club enters the top flight of Dutch football. The first of 17 National League championship was won in 1929 and PSV secured their first Dutch FA Cup in 1950. Five years later they became the first Dutch club to enter in the European Cup and during the 1956-57 season, striker Coen Dillen wrote his name in the club’s history books by scoring 43 league goals that season, a record that still stands today.

During the mid 1970s, PSV enjoyed a golden era. With players like Willy van der Kuijlen, the Van de Kerkhof brothers, Jan van Beveren, Jan Poortvliet, Harry Lubse and Huub Stevens, PSV won two Dutch FA Cups and three League Championships. The Club also won its first major European title on May 9, 1978, clinching the UEFA Cup after a spectacular 3-0 success in their home second leg against French opponents Bastia following a goalless draw in the first game.

After that successful era, PSV had to start again but once more they built a team that was to regularly challenge for honours both domestically and in Europe.

During the late 80s, the club boasted a squad featuring a number of top international players including Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman, Hans van Breukelen, Gerald Vanenburg, Wim Kieft, Sören Lerby, Frank Arnesen and Erik Gerets and it was no surprise that this side enjoyed unprecedented success in Holland. From 1986 until 1992 PSV won an amazing seven league titles and three Dutch FA Cups.

The 1987-88 season culminated in the biggest moment in the club’s history when they won the treble. Having already secured the domestic double, PSV took on Portuguese giants Benfica in the European Cup Final on May 25, 1988, in front of a 70,000 crowd in Stuttgart. With no goals in 90 minutes, the game went into extra time although still the deadlock couldn’t be broken, but PSV held their nerve to win a penalty shoot-out 6-5 and the European Cup came to Eindhoven.
