FA Cup Final

Spurs 2 Nottingham Forest 1 (aet)

Triumph and tragedy in 120 minutes at Wembley.

What should have been the Paul Gascoigne final after his heroics in previous
rounds will always be remembered for the wrong reasons as far as he is
concerned - his rash challenge on Forest’s Gary Charles almost ended his
career.

Gazza was stretchered off after that foul and to add insult to injury,
Stuart Pearce unleashed a trademark rasper of a free-kick for Brian Clough’s
men to take the lead.

Everything looked like it was going wrong. Gary Lineker’s ‘goal’ was ruled
out for offside and minutes later his penalty was saved by Mark Crossley.
But there was no stopping Spurs and we finally levelled through Paul Stewart
to take the game into extra time.

Then another twist as, under pressure from Gary Mabbutt, Forest defender Des

Walker headed into his own net for what turned out to be the winner.

Team: Thorstvedt, Edinburgh, Vvan den Hauw, Sedgley, Howells, Mabbutt,
Stewart, Gascoigne (Nayim), Samways (Walsh), Lineker, Allen.

Attendance: 80,000.
