Spurs at the World Cup - Anderton, France 98

Darren Anderton - Spurs 1992-2004, 358 appearances, 48 goals
Sol Campbell - Spurs 1992-2001, 315 appearances, 15 goals
Les Ferdinand - Spurs 1997-2002, 149 appearances, 38 goals

Darren Anderton was handed his England debut by Terry Venables in 1994 and played in all five matches as England progressed all the way to the semi-finals of Euro 96 so, despite injury during the 1997-1998 season, it should be no surprise that he was selected by Glenn Hoddle for the squad for the finals in France in 1998, alongside team-mates Sol Campbell and Les Ferdinand.

David Beckham had emerged by then and was also in the squad, but Anderton got the nod for the opener and played 90 minutes in the 2-0 win against Tunisia.

England were then rocked by a 2-1 loss against Romania, when Beckham joined the fray early after injury to Paul Ince.

The United man held onto his place in the crucial final group match and it was to be Beckham and Anderton who would deliver against Columbia, Anderton rifling the ball into the top corner from an acute angle for the opening goal after 20 minutes. Beckham then curled home one of his trademark free-kicks and England were through to face Argentina in the second round.

Anderton started again in St Etienne but Beckham took the headlines for all the wrong reasons this time, picking up a red card after a clash with Diego Simeone.

It was the match lit up early by Michael Owen's wonder strike - aged just 18 at the time - and Campbell, who had also started all of England's matches in France, famously 'scored' a header that would have made it 2-1 late on, but the 'goal' was chalked off.

The match ended 2-2 after extra time and England went out on penalties.

Anderton went on to earn 30 caps while Campbell, also handed his debut by Venables in 1996, went on to represent his country on 73 occasions. Ferdinand, who earned 17 caps between 1993-1998, was at the tournament but didn't feature.
