Spurs 6-0 Millwall

Heung-Min Son scored a hat-trick as we brushed aside Millwall with a dominant display in the FA Cup quarter-final at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Our South Korean striker made it six goals in four FA Cup ties this season, while there were also goals for Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and Vincent Janssen as we booked our place in the Wembley semi-finals in a game which saw us enjoy 76 per cent possession and 15 shots on target.

The downside to the afternoon was the early departure through injury of Harry Kane, who was replaced in the 10th minute by Eriksen after appearing to hurt his ankle when firing in a shot under pressure from Millwall’s Jake Cooper.

It was his replacement who got the ball rolling though, the Dane sweeping home on 31 minutes before Son added his first 10 minutes later with a wonderful curling effort. Nine minutes after the interval, Son doubled his tally with a neat finish from Kieran Trippier’s pass, before two further goals in seven minutes.

First, Dele tapped home from close range after an excellent move on 72 minutes and Janssen added his name to the scoresheet as he fired in from Son’s ball - a strike that proved particularly popular among the White Hart Lane faithful as it was the Dutch international's long-awaited first from open play in our colours.

And the star of the show rounded off the scoring with his hat-trick goal in stoppage time, Son connecting with a left-footed volley from Eriksen’s clipped cross which squirmed through the legs of Millwall goalkeeper Tom King.

We join Arsenal, Manchester City and either Chelsea or Manchester United in the last four, with the draw taking place at the conclusion of Monday night’s match between the latter two sides.

Mauricio Pochettino made four changes from the side which beat Everton 3-2 at the Lane last weekend. Michel Vorm replaced Hugo Lloris in goal, Trippier came in for Kyle Walker and Harry Winks and Son were in for Mousa Dembele and Eriksen respectively. Dembele missed out altogether while the other three players were all on the bench. Millwall’s ex-Spurs youngsters Jordan Archer and Calum Butcher weren’t in the starting line-up, goalkeeper Archer missing the game through injury while Butcher was a substitute.

Early pressure, early change – 10mins
There was a cracking London derby cup-tie atmosphere at kick-off, with both sets of supporters in great voice but it was us who made the better start to the game and peppered the Millwall goal in the opening minutes. Visiting goalkeeper King had to make good stops from Kane, Son and Winks inside the opening eight minutes, but Kane’s effort came at a price as he hurt his right ankle as he was challenged by Cooper and had to be substituted for Eriksen on 10 minutes.

We slightly lost our rhythm after the change and our play wasn’t as fluid as Millwall started to settle into the game. The Lions had their first sight of goal on 27 minutes when Steve Morison curled an effort well wide from 25 yards, while Jan Vertonghen drilled a loose ball over the bar for us following a cleared corner. But the opener arrived just after the half-hour mark when Tripper sent over a cross, Cooper and Byron Webster went for the same ball, Dele won the next header and Eriksen swept home from 15 yards past King. It was almost 2-0 moments later when Victor Wanyama won a far post header from Eriksen’s corner, only for his effort to hit the crossbar.

Ten minutes later though the second goal did arrive - and it was a beauty! Millwall were on a rare foray forward when the move broke down, Dele lead the charge and laid off to the supporting Eric Dier, who found Son wide on the right. He cut inside onto his left foot and sent a delightful curling effort past the despairing King, no more than we deserved after a dominant half of football.

The game followed a similar pattern in the opening minutes of the second half as we totally controlled proceedings. Dele couldn’t quite control and flick over King, Davies cut inside but fired wide on his weaker right foot, Eriksen forced King into a diving save then hit another over the bar, before the third goal duly arrived. Trippier clipped a magnificent ball over the defence for Son, whose first-time volley flew inside the post.

Our football was a delight to watch at times and the move for the fourth goal was certainly a great example of that. Winks played an inch-perfect pass out to Trippier on the right, he laid it off to Eriksen just inside the area and the Dane threaded a low cross which Dele, timing his run to perfection as always, tucked home inside the six yard box. Changes to personnel followed, with Janssen and Moussa Sissoko replacing Dele and Wanyama respectively.

The goals just kept coming and five minutes after entering the fray, Janssen added his name to the scoresheet. Another sweeping move saw the ball move from Vorm to Davies via Eriksen, then onto Son who bamboozled the Millwall defence before squaring to Janssen and his first-time, left-foot shot fizzed past King and into the net - without doubt getting the biggest cheer of the day as the Spurs faithful showed their appreciation for the Dutch striker.

There was just time for Son to complete his hat-trick in the dying seconds of the game. Sissoko played in Eriksen down the left and he clipped over a deep cross which the South Korean hit on the volley. The shot was straight at King and he appeared to save the effort, only for the ball to somehow slip from his grasp and dribble through his legs and over the line. It was Son's sixth FA Cup goal in four matches this season, while he also grabbed one in the competition last term as well.

"We played very well, I’m very pleased with the performance. We were very focused from the first moment and that was our plan. The job is done and we’re in the semi-final at Wembley. We started well, created a lot of chances and then after a few chances we scored and dominated. We controlled the game. I’m happy because in theory this was a game that was difficult. They arrived at White Hart Lane in very good form, they beat three Premier League teams in the FA Cup and the way we took the game was fantastic."

Vincent Janssen said

"I was happy to get some time. It was a nice pass from Sonny and I saw space and I’m happy to score. We really wanted to go through. The semi-finals are so important and we did a good job to win 6-0. We want to win trophies, we’re in the semi-final now and we have to go on and continue our form. We’ll see who we get next."

We’re back at White Hart Lane for the fourth consecutive Sunday next weekend when Southampton visit in the Premier League. Claude Puel’s side currently sit 10th in the division with just nine wins from their 26 matches so far this term, but they have won two of their last three away games in the league, scoring four against both Sunderland (4-0) and Watford (4-3). We lost this fixture 2-1 last season, but did enjoy a 4-1 win at St Mary’s in December.
