Spurs 4-0 Everton U21s - Matt's verdict

Matt Wells was delighted to see our Under-21s take on board key points from a goalless draw last time out against Southampton to move back to the top of the Barclays U21 Premier League with a 4-0 win against Everton on Monday.

Everton were taken apart inside the first 35 minutes at the Training Centre.

Shaq Coulthirst had already seen a goal disallowed when he opened the scoring on six minutes, Connor Ogilvie made it 2-0 on 20 minutes, Ruben Lameiras won possession and set-up Shaq for 3-0 four minutes later before being tripped himself and despatching the penalty for 4-0 with 33 minutes on the clock.

“It was a really good performance,” said Matt. “We were a little disappointed at Southampton, two-thirds of the pitch were impressive but we lacked a bit of penetration.

“This time, we showed a lot of the aspects of play we’ve been speaking to the players about, more penetration, more forward thinking, passing and running, so in the end it was very pleasing.

“What was pleasing, especially in the first half, was that we built on what we did at Southampton against a good Everton team and special mention to Bongani Khumalo, Filip Lesniak, Connor Ogilvie and Alex McQueen who as a back four, were outstanding.

“We’ve a lot of games to go and plenty to play for. We’re still in the shake-up in the league, joint-top with a game in hand and that’s important, we’re always demanding of individual performances but the collective is important as well.”

Matt also had words of praise for Aaron McEneff, the midfielder back from a long-term knee injury to make his first start of the campaign.

“Aaron’s had a long time out and not played many minutes this season,  so it was brilliant to see him back out there today sitting in front of the back four and showing what he can do,” added Matt.
