Spurs 1-0 Chelsea U21s - Ugo's verdict

Tue 28 October 2014, 10:03|Tottenham Hotspur

Ugo Ehiogu was delighted with our performance as we secured a 1-0 win against Chelsea in the Barclays Under-21 Premier League on Monday night.

Emmanuel Sonupe’s 89th-minute winner consigned the Blues to defeat, while a resilient defensive display saw us keep our first Under-21s clean sheet of the season at Stevenage’s Lamex Stadium.

Goalkeeper Luke McGee, who pulled off a handful of impressive stops, along with the centre-half pairing of Cameron Carter-Vickers and captain Dominic Ball, earned praise from Ugo afterwards – with our Under-21s Coach also giving a thumbs-up to our attacking endeavours.

“There were some very big displays,” Ugo said. “Luke McGee was excellent with two of his saves in particular low down in the corner and Cameron Carter-Vickers, at 16 years of age, dominated their centre-forward. I thought Dominic Ball was solid as well and I could pick out another three or four more very good performances, so that’s the pleasing thing.

“On top of that, we got a clean sheet and played in a way that I want to watch, and that suits Tottenham.”

The result marked our first victory in four Barclays Under-21 Premier League attempts – and Ugo believes we were good value for the win.

“It was a tough game, make no mistake,” he added. “Chelsea had a very good period and they’ve got some really experienced Under-21s players.

“But our players did the things we asked of them – to be compact and to understand a slightly different way of playing, which needed a little bit of working out in the first 15 or 20 minutes.

“I thought we were the one team that was going to score. We probed, we got into little pockets, we had people running in behind and we caused them problems.”
