Spurs 0-3 Liverpool - Mauricio's verdict

Sun 31 August 2014, 19:10|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino felt the key moments went against us as we suffered a 3-0 loss against Liverpool at the Lane on Sunday.

Liverpool put us on the back foot when Raheem Sterling opened the scoring with only eight minutes on the clock.

Both teams had chances after that and crucially, with the scoreline still at 1-0, Emmanuel Adebayor lobbed onto the roof of the net and Nacer Chadli had a volley tipped over by Simon Mignolet.

They next key moment was a penalty awarded against Eric Dier for a tug on Joe Allen just three minutes into the second half, Steven Gerrard converted and that left us with an uphill battle. Alberto Moreno drilled home for 3-0 on the hour.

“We’re very disappointed with the result,” reflected Mauricio. “I think two moments in the game were key, at the beginning (of the game) and then at the start of the second half, the soft penalty.

“In the first half, after going 1-0 down, we stayed in the game and created some chances. We competed very well.

“At the start of the second half the penalty was difficult to accept and at 3-0, it’s a difficult game.

“In football you need to have luck in these key moments.

“But we need to improve and we need to learn from this defeat.

“We need to keep our confidence, look forward and improve - this is the most important thing.”
