Robbo's advice for our latest Three Lions

Thu 26 March 2015, 12:05|Tottenham Hotspur

Graham Roberts has one piece of advice for our latest England call-ups: “Keep doing what you are doing.”

Harry Kane and Ryan Mason’s performances for us have been recognised at international level with first calls into the Three Lions’ senior squad.

They join Andros Townsend and Kyle Walker for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania on Friday night before a tough friendly trip to face Italy in Turin on Tuesday.

The call-ups had legendary former midfielder/defender Graham harking back to the first time he was selected back in 1983.

“I was with the Spurs squad for a post-season tour in Trinidad & Tobago in 1983, we’d just finished a match when Keith Burkinshaw told me that I’d been called up for England,” said ‘Robbo’, who won the FA Cup with us in 1981 and 1982 before captaining us in the second leg of our UEFA Cup triumph in 1984.

“We played Northern Ireland and Scotland. The Home Internationals were huge games in those days and it was an unbelievable feeling.

“You have to remember that a few years before, I was playing non-league football!"

Robbo, who won six full caps, joined us from non-league Weymouth in May, 1980.

“To be called up by England was incredible and I thoroughly enjoyed it," he added.

"In my first game, Peter Shilton made a wonder save to prevent me scoring an own goal against Northern Ireland, otherwise I might have been out of the team with just one cap!

“Bobby Robson was manager then and came up to me and said ‘you did well on Saturday so I’m going to give you another go, son’.

“I went on to play the second game against Scotland and went from there. I enjoyed every minute and I’m sure the lads will as well.

“If they walk out there with the white shirt on, the Three Lions on their chest, it’s special and stays with you forever.

“I would just say to them ‘keep your feet on the ground and keep your heads’. I don’t think these lads will do anything else anyway, they are all down-to-earth and hopefully they will continue what they are doing for a long time.”
