On this day - January 8

A photographic take on 'On This Day' where we'll dig deep into our archives to bring you the images to represent what was happening on this day in our history.

We start with a club legend born on this day in 1945 and an FA Cup third round tie against Peterborough United 20 years ago...

ON THIS DAY - JANUARY 8

1910 - Everton's first visit to the Lane and we ran out 3-1 winners, Bert Middlemiss on target twice, Robert Steel with the third.

1945 - Phil Beal's birthday. Ever-reliable, consistent full-back Phil made 420 appearances in all competitions between 1963-75. He was in the teams that won the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and the UEFA Cup in 1972, as well as picking up a UEFA Cup runners-up medal in 1974. Happy birthday, Phil!

1994 - We needed a last-gasp equaliser from Jason Dozell to stay in the FA Cup via a 1-1 draw against Peterborough United at London Road. We then needed a penalty shoot-out to finally overcome the Post after another draw back at the Lane. That was our last penalty shoot-out success until the  spot-kick win against Hull in the Capital One Cup earlier this season.
