Glenn Hoddle has admitted he would love to rest some of his weary young troops — but it’s not an option for him.
Boss Glenn suggested that a few of the younger players who have been thrown in at the Premiership deep end in recent weeks need a rest.
But it would seem that the likes of Gary Doherty, Anthony Gardner, Simon Davies and Alton Thelwell, who have just completed a hectic schedule of seven games in 25 days, will have to dig deep for the challenge of facing champions Manchester United on May 19.
Although the injury situation is improving only Sergei Rebrov and Steffen Iversen have any realistic chance of making the United game.
“I’ve got no option but to give the youngsters experience,” Glenn pointed out. “There is no-one there coming out of the treatment room.
“Some of the youngsters need a rest and they have played a lot of football for their age. I want to rest them but I can’t. My bench was full of young lads at Leicester so there are few options.
“But we’ve one game to go, against Manchester United, and that will be a great experience for them.
“These players will gain experience by playing against that sort of talent and that’s the major advantage of playing United on the last day of the season.
“Points-wise, it’s not going to make a lot difference. If we get the three points it would be great in front of our own supporters, if we don’t the youngsters will gain from playing that sort of talent.”
