Newcastle 0-4 Spurs - report from St James' Park

A double from Emmanuel Adebayor and goals from Paulinho and Nacer Chadli secured a first Premier League win at St James Park since August 2004, when Thimothee Atouba won the day.

This time, the win on our travels makes the team the strongest away from home in the top flight with 29 points now gathered on opposition pitches. For Adebayor, it is now eight goals in his last ten Premier League games, with Paulinho now on six - and all away from home.

Tim Sherwood made three changes to the team that beat Everton at the weekend, with Younes Kaboul, Etienne Capoue and Kyle Naughton drafted into the side.

Mousa Dembele carved out a fine chance in the fifth minute, bringing down a long clearance from Hugo Lloris and forcing his way past Davide Santon before teeing up Adebayor in front of goal. Unfortunately the striker dragged his shot just wide.

Tim Krul was called into action moments later when a Paulinho piledriver stung his palms, but his work was eclipsed by excellence from Lloris at the other end. Luuk de Jong knocked down a long ball into the area and, right in front of goal, Papis Cisse was first to react and struck goalwards. He must have been preparing to wheel away and celebrate, only for the lightening reflexes of Lloris to block his effort and lines were then cleared.

Vertonghen headed narrowly wide from a Kyle Walker free-kick in the 15th minute after a little spell where Newcastle appeared to be getting into a stride.

The sting was drawn on 18 minutes when after a neat passage of passing football, Nabil Bentaleb strode down the left and crossed low. Krul reacted but could only divert into the path of Adebayor, who had the job of stroking into an empty net before delivering his now customary salute.

It could have been two when Walker dispatched another low cross into the area that Aaron Lennon was sprinting onto at pace. It looked like the winger could well have been upended in the process, but referee Mr Swarbrick pointed for a corner.

Lennon hit the post on 30 minutes after cutting inside from an Adebayor supply line, while Moussa Sissoko was not far away with a curling effort at the other end five minutes before the break.

The passing was crisp and forceful throughout most of the half and the advantage was definitely deserved and perhaps should have been a greater margin. Newcastle remained a threat on the break but Capoue was offering his back line excellent protection with an assured performance, while Kaboul was looking pretty steady on his return.

The team continued pinging the ball around with authority in the opening exchanges of the second half before doubling the advantage in a clinical fashion. Adebayor swapped passes on the edge of the area before unleashing a shot that Krul could not hold and Paulinho was there in a flash to steer into the net to make it 2-0 on 54 minutes.

Dembele made way for Andros Townsend on 63 minutes as the game hit a bit of a lull, with frustrations growing in the home crowd. Santon shooting across the face of goal bought the ground to life for a few seconds on 70 minutes, before Lloris athletically saved from Mathieu Debuchy.

Nacer Chadli was introduced for Lennon on 74 minutes, but it was Lloris next in action with a superb stooping save from a Cisse header.

The cap was put on a fine performance on 83 minutes when Townsend forced a good save from Krul from a powerful hit, but Adebayor kicked the bouncing ball off the ground and into the net.

And that wasn't all! Two minutes from time, Chadli hit the goal of the night, a 25-yard curler that buried into the top corner. That was the icing on the cake!
