Nethercott recalls New Year triumph against United

If our trip to Manchester United yields the same result as the last time we took on the Red Devils on New Year’s Day, we’ll have got 2014 off to a flying start!
Back on the opening day of 1996, we thumped United 4-1 at White Hart Lane.
And although this New Year’s Day encounter takes place at Old Trafford, the lads will be hoping to emulate that famous victory.
Former defender Stuart Nethercott, these days a regular for the Spurs Legends team, played in our 1996 triumph – and it’s a game he describes as one of the best moments of his career.
“Beating Man United 4-1 on New Year’s Day was probably one of the highlights for me,” said Stuart, who went on to enjoy a successful career with Millwall after his time at Spurs.
“To win that game at the Lane was really something special. They had Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Roy Keane, and the youngsters were coming through at the time – the likes of David Beckham, Gary and Phil Neville, players like that.
“They lost Peter Schmeichel during the game, and we went on and really took advantage.”
