As Emmanuel Adebayor saluted more goals at one end, Kyle Naughton put his seal of approval on a fine shut-out at the other at St James’ Park.
The versatile defender once again answered the call at left-back for Wednesday’s thumping win against Newcastle United – and was purring with delight after playing his part in another fine rearguard display.
“It was a good team performance and it was great to get a clean sheet, that’s the most important thing for the defence,” enthused the 25-year-old.
“Jan, Younes and Walks were all outstanding and we’ve a goalkeeper who is unbelievable, he’s making some incredible saves.
“You just feel more comfortable (with Hugo in goal). You know if the opposition get past us, they then have to get past Hugo.
“He’s so quick off his line and some of the shots he’s saved from close range, he’s like a cat across his goal.
“It’s great to score four goals and keep a clean sheet.”
The selfless full-back went on to reaffirm his intention to give his all when called upon – even if it’s not in his preferred role.
“Left-back isn’t my position, but you have to go out there and do a job for the team and that’s what I’ve always tried to do,” he added.
“With it being a win and a clean sheet, I hope I’ve done a good job.
“We’re on a good run, we need to keep it going and with the team we’ve got at the moment, strength on the bench as well, it’s looking good.”
