Legends mark 30-year anniversary of UEFA Cup glory

The stars of our 1983-84 UEFA Cup final victory were out in force at White Hart Lane on Friday night – exactly 30 years since winning the trophy.

Many of the players from that famous night on May 23, 1984, re-convened at the stadium to reminisce on our penalty shootout victory against Anderlecht, which came about after the two-legged final ended all square at 2-2.

Graham Roberts, Paul Miller, Tony Parks, Mark Falco, Tony Galvin, Micky Hazard, Gary Mabbutt, Chris Hughton, Ossie Ardiles, Ricky Villa, Gary O’Reilly, Keith Burkinshaw, Steve Perryman, Peter Shreeves, John Pratt and physio Mike Varney were on the all-star roll-call – and they were joined by a healthy gathering of supporters and guests to look back on that successful European campaign.

“It doesn’t seem like 30 years, it’s gone so quick, but it feels quite strange to be back here on exactly the same night when we actually lifted the trophy,” said Falco, who scored in the shootout.

“We’re always happy to see each other. We still meet up regularly and we’ve been like one big family over the years.”

Perryman, who missed the second leg of the final through suspension, agreed that the close bond between the lads is as evident now as it was three decades ago.

“We were a very tight unit and you could see that tonight,” he said. “We were a very honest team and very close together.

“That was part of our strength and the honesty has shown just by the lads turning up and doing their bit and wanting to be together, even now.”

Attendees enjoyed dinner at the stadium, with the Legends then taking part in a Q&A session and giving their own personal accounts of our 1983-84 campaign.
