TOWER HAMLET VETS 2-5 SPURS LEGENDS
Darren Anderton netted a first half hat-trick as the Spurs Legends ran out 5-2 winners against Tower Hamlets Vets at AFC Hornchurch on Sunday.
The midfielder was in red hot form as he netted a stunning treble in a benefit match for Tower Hamlets’ Johnny Quinn.
Spurs started slowly against a Tower Hamlets side that included former Leicester City star Muzzy Izzet, but they soon found their stride and took a 16th-minute lead.
Anderton played Steve Slade in behind the defence, and the big striker took his time before slotting past the goalkeeper.
A spectacular curling lob from 40 yards by Anderton doubled Tottenham’s lead mid-way through the first half, with Anderton netting his second shortly afterwards after playing a one-two with Slade.
By the 29th minute Spurs were cruising as Justin Edinburgh split the Tower Hamlets defence open with a precision pass for Mark Stimson to fire home.
The hosts pulled a goal back on 32 minutes, but Anderton completed his hat-trick 60 seconds later when he netted the rebound after Clive Wilson’s angled shot was parried by the keeper.
There was a further chance for Spurs on the stroke of half-time as Anderton swung a corner into the box, but Mark Falco volleyed wide at the far post.
Tower Hamlets began the second half determined to haul themselves back into the game, and that they did on 54 minutes as their attacker netted at the back post.
After both teams made changes, it was the Lilywhites who thought they had the last laugh as substitute Micky Southam rolled the ball home on 88 minutes with the Tower Hamlets goalkeeper already committed outside his six-yard box, but the referee deemed that the goalkeeper had been fouled and the goal never stood.
