Ledley wins Barclays award

Fri 15 October 2004, 12:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Ledley King has won the Barclays Player of the Month for September.

This is the first time a defender has won the award since Rio Ferdinand at Leeds in October 2001.

Ledley picks up his first Barclays Player of the Month Award after his fantastic performances last month. He helped the team secure successive clean sheets against Norwich and Chelsea.

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football’s governing bodies, the media and fans.

Nic Gault, from the Barclays Awards Panel, said: "Ledley King has returned to club football in fantastic form after playing a key role in England’s Euro 2004 campaign.

"His defensive performance against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge was first class, rightly earning him the Barclays Man of the Match Award. King was instrumental in Tottenham’s strong defensive record throughout September, it’s not surprising team mates and pundits alike single him out for praise."

Teammate Jermain Defoe added his own little tribute, saying the performances of Ledley deserve great credit.

"I think in the last three or four games he has got Man of the Match and, to be honest, he deserves it," said Jermain. "He is so solid and it is unfortunate for him that he wasn't in the England side because he has done so well and hasn't let anyone down.

"He is flying at the moment and hopefully he can keep doing it for us."
