Ledley names charities to benefit from Testimonial

Fri 25 April 2014, 15:18|Tottenham Hotspur

Three charities close to the heart of our legendary Club Ambassador will benefit from monies raised at the Ledley King Testimonial Match on Monday 12th May.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Skills project, The Willow Foundation and Bowel Cancer Awareness UK are the former skipper’s chosen good causes, with the Tottenham Tribute Trust also set to receive a contribution of the funds raised.

A team of ex-players who shared the dressing room with Ledley during his 13 years as a player, including David Ginola, Teddy Sheringham and Darren Anderton, will take on the current first team on what will be a memorable night at the Lane, with tickets still on sale!

Just one of the fundraising aspects will see shirts worn by players on the night individually signed and auctioned off for the charities.

Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s Skills project is regularly attended by Ledley, and has been providing a safe and engaging environment for young people in the Tottenham area to take part in sport and education activities every night of the week, free of charge, for the past two years, in partnership with London Boxing Academy, Haringey Council and People’s Postcode Lottery.

Willow supports seriously ill 16 to 40 year olds by providing unique and positive Special Days. Since 1999, the charity has fulfilled more than 10,000 Special Days for young adults living with life-threatening conditions such as cancer, motor neurone disease, cystic fibrosis, muscular dystrophy and Huntington’s disease.

Bowel Cancer Awareness UK is a new charity aimed at raising awareness and educating people on the treatments available, as well as offering support for partners and loved ones of those with the condition.

Ledley said: “Each of the charities I am raising money for has a special place in my heart and I hope that you will join me in making the Testimonial a special occasion that will benefit these causes.

“Skills has played a big part in my Ambassadorial role with the Club, and I have seen first-hand the impact this project has had on the young people who attend, many of whom have been involved in gangs or have come from difficult backgrounds. It is a clear example of how our fantastic Foundation is continuing to create life-changing opportunities.

“Willow is a charity I have been a big supporter of over the years, attending a number of fundraisers, and it always amazes me the work that goes into providing memorable experiences for those with life-limiting conditions and the support provided to families at a difficult time.

“And Bowel Cancer Awareness UK is an extremely important cause, given the fact that it is predicted bowel cancer will have risen by 120 per cent in under 30s, mainly due to diet, by 2020. I unfortunately lost both of my grandparents to cancer, including my grandmother to bowel cancer, so this has added significance for me and my family.”

Keep an eye out across our channels for further updates on who else will feature in Ledley's XI on May 12th.
