Ledley: "I was in with the fans at Chelsea, and loved every minute"

‘We’ve got Ledley at the back’ turned into ‘we’ve got Ledley at the Bridge’ as the King of the Lane sat with our fans at Chelsea on Saturday.

Modern-day Spurs legend, captain and now Club Ambassador, Ledley said it 'just felt like the right time’ to experience this London derby from the away end.

“I’ve wanted to go and sit in with the fans for a while,” he said. “It was a huge game, I thought we had a chance of winning it and I wanted to be there.

“I really enjoyed it. I went through the turnstiles at a stadium probably for the first time since I was about 18! I almost forgot how it all worked!

“As soon as I got into the concourses the fans started singing my name and my cover was blown!

“I really enjoyed the experience. It was strange, seeing it all from a different point of view. Of course, I was looking down and thinking back to all the times I’d run out at Stamford Bridge and remembering what it was like to be down there but you soon get caught up in it all from a fan's perspective.

“It gives you a real insight. I’ve got friends who are fans and being able to see them in amongst it all, I don’t often get to see that! It’s a totally different experience and it was important for me to see a game that way. There was so much passion and I’ll be back in there again before too long.”

As for the game, Ledley certainly felt the fans' and players’ pain as we performed so well in the first half and took the lead only for Chelsea to level a minute before half-time. Victor Moses then hit what turned out to be the winner for the home side six minutes into the second half.

“It was disappointing to see us play so well and not get the result,” added Ledley, who played 323 times for us between 1999-2012. “We started really well, controlled the game, Victor and Mousa won everything in midfield and Chelsea were struggling with us.

“To concede that goal right on half-time was a real blow. You sensed Chelsea would come out a better side after that and they had a spell where they scored again and looked dangerous.

“We needed to stay in the game, did that and worked our way back into it but couldn’t create that one more opportunity. We were the better side for long periods and we have to take positives from the performance.”
