Kevin Wimmer believes he’s learned a great deal from our regular Toby Alderweireld-Jan Vertonghen central defensive partnership this season.
A summer arrival from German side 1. FC Köln, the 23-year-old has seen the Belgian international duo combine to good effect in the Premier League, to the extent that we currently hold the top flight’s third best defensive record in 2015-16.
Having made a handful of appearances in the cup competitions to date, Austrian international Kevin says he’s been impressed by the endeavours of his defensive colleagues this term.
And he reckons the cues he’s taken from Toby and Jan’s showings can only help him as he continues to work hard on the training ground with the goal of earning more game time in the future.
“Toby and Jan are really good players and I can learn a lot from them,” he explained. “They’re first choice for Belgium as well as Spurs so that shows their quality.
“Before I came here I always watched them on television – Jan for Spurs and Toby for Southampton – and I knew they were big stars, really good centre-backs. Then one day I went from just watching them to coming here and working together with them and that’s been amazing.
“For me, I’m still quite young and I can learn a lot from players like that. At the games I try to look at what they are doing so I can improve myself.
“Of course, I hope that I will play more games soon but there is still plenty of time. I really enjoy the chance to work with Toby, Jan, Federico Fazio and the other defenders here, it’s fun to train together with them and everything is really positive.”
