International special - Jurgen back at Spurs!

Fri 14 November 2014, 09:00|Tottenham Hotspur

As he settled into the new surroundings of his former 'home', Jurgen Klinsmann told us how he's determined to take the USA to the very top of world football.

Our legendary former striker and a World Cup winner with Germany in 1990, Jurgen was back at the club as Head Coach of the US national team and using our world-class training facility as preparation for friendlies against Colombia at Fulham on Friday and the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday.

Jurgen guided the US into the knockout stage of the World Cup in Brazil in the summer where they narrowly lost out to Belgium in one of the best games of the tournament.

Now Jurgen - who scored 38 goals in 68 appearances - is targeting the last four in Russia, 2018.

Interviewed by his friend, former team-mate and fellow legend Gary Mabbutt, Jurgen first gave his first impressions of Hotspur Way.

"This is unbelievable, overwhelming actually," he said. "It’s world-class. It gives you the feeling that time has moved on and this is the future."

In a fascinating interview, Jurgen set out his goals for the USA. "I think we sent out signals to the world that we are a nation that is ambitious and wants to do well, not just NFL, basketball, baseball and hockey, we want to do well in football as well.

"Leaving Portugal and Ghana behind in our group at the World Cup was big.

"I think everyone woke up and thought ‘what’s going on with the Americans?’

"Now our goal is to build on that foundation and do even better at the next World Cup.

"We have set a very high goal. We’ve said we want to get into the semi-finals in Russia. That’s a very high benchmark we’ve communicated and I did that purposely because I want the players to be hungry for that and want to prove it. If we don’t, there will be reasons but at least we have a goal in mind."
